Stalls are 90 degrees to the milking pit. The cows are kept in position by a group of self-locking stanchions. As the lead cow enters the parlor, she must proceed to the first open stanchion and turn 90 degrees. When she places her head into the self-lock, the next stanchion opens up for the following cow, and so on. Thus, each cow is locked individually in a milking position. The stalls are either constructed of galvanized steel or stainless steel.
